Frederick Pickering's Biography

Treasurer/Administrator/Planner

Frederick Pickering was born deaf in Corpus Christi Naval Hospital, in Corpus Christi, Texas on October 19, 1947. With his father being a military man, his family transferred a couple times to Maryland, Rhode Island, and California before moving to Washington, D.C. when he was eleven. Prior to moving to Washington, D.C., his parents researched schools in the U.S. and made the decision to enroll his deaf brother, Herbert, and Fred at Kendall School for the Deaf. He continued his education there until he graduated in 1965 and went to Gallaudet University at the age of 17. He graduated in 1970 with a BS degree in Mathematics.

Fred pursued a Master’s degree in Computer Sciences at American University (AU) two years after his graduation from Gallaudet College. He maintained a B average, regardless of the fact that he did not have an interpreter and that he had to deal with the erratic attitudes of professors, he maintained the grade average B well until he got C in the last course. He got a letter from AU that he must make two A's to complete the degree. He had enough of putting up with all financial hardship, worse of all, without interpreter and professors’ attitudes so he lost interest in attending AU.

Fred married his wife in 1973. They lived in Maryland and started their family there. They eventually had two daughters, Felicia and Farrah, and a son, Fred Jr. After living in Maryland for 9 years, the family moved to Virginia in 1982. All of his children are currently married and live close to home. Felicia is married and has one son and two daughters, Fred Jr. is married and has three daughters, and Farrah is married and has a son.

In his spare time, his hobby is renovating his home in Great Falls, Virginia, converting it from a Colonial home into a Victorian style house.

After 36 years of employment with the government, he is now preparing to retire someday.
